A Review on Real-World Case: Google is Changing Everything (textbook chapter 1, pg.38)

Intro
This article discussed on how Google has been expanding its application in order to stay competitive. It started of by introducing Google, whereby it is one of the EC companies that has made a huge impact of our work and life. Google has an effective and efficient EC management strategy that leads to its success. Google is one of the fastest growing companies with revenues of about $1 billion in 2005. Google is mostly known to us as a search engine probably its related targeted advertising tools.

Activities

One of google’s activity is to use the spreadsheet as a web-based application that its users can use to put in and share data. It is a free web-based application where up to 10 users can use it simultaneously, overcoming key limitation of Microsoft’s Excel. The reason the spreadsheet is chosen is because it is widely used to organize information. This application is aimed at small work teams as it could import and export data from Excel or the open Comma Separated Value(.csv).

This would enable its user to make and share their information online through the Web. The data created by the users are saved into Google’s servers over the Web. This application is also equipped with the common Excel formulas and over 200 functions. Apart from this, Google has other applications with the same aim like the Writely and Google Calender.

Google also has an online database service that enables various information to be posted by the users called Google Base. Many analyst viewed it as a breakthrough into classified e-advertising , an e-commerce activity as it would allow users to feature relevant information on Google’s main search index.

Google also introduces the Google Office to rival that of Microsoft Office as an expansion into software business.

Enterprise search
Google has partnered BearingPoint, an IT consulting firm to supply Enterprise search capabilities. Enterprise Search Capabilities make contents of an enterprise to be indexed, searched and displayed to authorized users. The most important aspect is the programming where enterprise contents are being sorted.Other applications can be used to boost the performance of enterprise searches, such as CognosGo! Search Service. Oracle also offers this service such as , eRP and CRM.

Example
An example is Kaiser Permanente, America’s largest non-profit health maintenance organization. It has almost 9million members. It uses Enterprise Search for its 50000 doctors, nurses and other caregivers in its database. This enable medical staffs access to alot of medical informations. Kaiser Permanente is using Google Search Appliance for its services .

Opinion

Google is now a major player in cyberspace. They are also one of the most recognized companies in the world. This is mainly due to its effectiveness in its marketing of their products and of course its services. We admit that we really enjoyed using the google servises, mainly its search engine because it is reliable and fast. Search results can pop-up within seconds after the click of your mouse, not only for broadband users but also dial-ups which are quite important for quick and efficient works. With this, we dare to say that google has alot of potential to continue expanding to greater heights.
